New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's re-election committee is allowed to use and, if needed, raise campaign funds to cover the cost of answering two subpoenas in the George Washington Bridge lane closure investigation, New Jersey's political financing monitor ruled Tuesday. The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission approved the request after navigating a thicket of legal interpretations of campaign finance rules and regulations. Commissioners expressed concern that because there had been so few facts about the lane closures known, by approving the request they could eventually allow for campaign funds to be used in a criminal investigation, which is prohibited.
