MIAMI — A man who handled billing duties at a South Florida medical clinic has been convicted in a $2.5 million health care fraud case.

Jurors in Miami this week convicted 51-year-old Cecilio Pelaez Delgado of 10 counts of health care fraud and one conspiracy count. Each count carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. A sentencing hearing is set for June 13.

According to trial testimony, Pelaez Delgado and others submitted fraudulent claims for expensive infusion and injection therapies to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and to Cigna. About $400,000 of the $2.5 million in claims were paid out.

Prosecutors say people suffering from HIV infections were paid bribes and kickbacks to attend the clinics.

Three other people associated with the Viton Therapy Medical Center were charged in the case.
