U.S. lawmakers celebrated Thursday on Twitter after the Russian government announced sanctions against nine White House officials and members of Congress.

"If standing up for #democracy & sovereignty in #Ukraine means I'm #SanctionedByPutin, I'll take it," Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., tweeted shortly after the announcement from the Russian government.

"Proud to be included on a list of those willing to stand against Putin's aggression," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, also noted on Twitter.

"I'm proud to be sanctioned by Putin - I'll never cease my efforts & dedication to freedom & independence of #Ukraine, which includes #Crimea," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., added.

Also on the list were Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La. and Dan Coats, R-Ind., along with White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer and deputy national security advisers Ben Rhodes and Caroline Atkinson.
