Cotton’s campaign declined to comment on the record about the situation.
Others have been vociferous. Erick Erickson, editor in chief of RedState.com, wrote on Wednesday that he won’t support Cotton’s campaign unless Cotton fires campaign manager Justin Brasell, who was listed as treasurer on Freedom Pioneers Action Network’s FEC filing until Tuesday afternoon.
“Brasell used Ben Sasse’s children in a television commercial to attack Ben Sasse,” Erickson wrote in a post at Red State published at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. “Then, after producing and placing the ads, Brasell quit his PAC that placed the ads. What a cowardly thing to do.”
Erickson is a staunch Sasse supporter; in January, he called on readers to give “every penny you can muster” to the candidate.
Sasse’s camp had harsh criticism for the ad.
“This is over the top: I've never seen an attack using someone's kids before,” said Jordan Gehrke, Sasse's senior adviser (Gehrke is the brother of Washington Examiner commentary writer Joel Gehrke). “Ben talks about his kids' future every day, meanwhile these guys are making attack ads using Ben's kids. Tells you everything you need to know about these people.”
