Long Island teen discovers wealthy parents dead
On this day, Sept. 7, in 1988, a teenager found his wealthy parents, Seymour and Arlene Tankleff, beaten and stabbed to death in their Long Island, N.Y., home. Investigators immediately focused on the couple's son, Martin Tankleff, 17, and began questioning him at the police station. Getting nowhere, a detective picked up a phone and pretended to have an officer at the hospital who said the father had come out of a coma and fingered Martin. Police said Martin confessed but quickly recanted.

Martin was convicted of the double-murder and spent 17 years in prison before new evidence emerged that pointed to three ex-convicts.

His conviction was vacated, and he was released from prison. Nobody else has been charged in the Tankleff murders, and whomever killed them remains at large. - Scott McCabe
