On this day, Oct. 12, in 1978, British punk star Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, to death in a New York hotel.

Vicious, the former bassist for the Sex Pistols, was charged with second-degree murder, released on bail and died hours later.

Vicious, born John Simon Ritchie, said he had awakened from a drugged stupor and was unable to recall what happened. He was charged with her murder.

Vicious was among the originators of the punk fashion of piercing the cheeks and lips with safety pins. Along with Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten, Vicious spit and even vomited onstage.

Vicious, 21, died less than four months after Spungen, of an overdose only hours after his release from Rikers Island.
