On this day, Nov. 12, in 1996, Jonathan Schmitz was convicted of second-degree murder for shooting Scott Amedure, a gay man who'd revealed a crush on Schmitz during "The Jenny Jones Show."

Schmitz, 26, who was straight, was ushered in front of the audience and the television cameras, and was shocked to learn his secret admirer was a man.

Three days after the taping, Amedure, 32, left a sexually explicit note at Schmitz's house in Lake Orion, Mich.

Schmitz bought a shotgun and confronted Amedure, shooting him in the chest at such close range that paper wadding from a shotgun shell ended up in Amedure's heart.

Schmitz was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.
