On this day, Aug. 24, in 1970, Vietnam War protesters set off a bomb at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, killing doctoral physics researcher Robert Fassnacht and severely injuring others.
The target was the Army Mathematics Research Center, located in Sterling Hall on campus.
The bombers filled a stolen van with close to 2,000 pounds of explosives. The blast damaged 26 nearby buildings, and pieces of the van were found on top of an eight-story building three blocks away. However, the targeted research center was barely damaged.
Three of the four men were later arrested and convicted; the fourth man -- Leo Frederick Burt -- remains wanted by the FBI to this day.
