A 4-year-old girl was hospitalized following a house fire early Sunday morning in Southeast D.C.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 3:30 a.m. at 2616 33rd St. SE, where officials say both floors of the two-story building were burning when they arrived.

The crew removed the child, who was not breathing, from the top floor, performed CPR and rushed her to the hospital. Three additional people were also taken from the building to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

Neither the conditions of the victims nor the cause of the fire were immediately available on Monday, but firefighters say they believe the flames started in the basement before engulfing the upper floors.

D.C. police have arrested Jerome Calvary Lewis, 46, in connection with the incident. He has been charged with simple assault and making threats, police spokesman Araz Alali said.

The investigation is ongoing.
