Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District of Columbia's nonvoting House member, on Thursday sparked a new hashtag on Twitter with a comment about the Iraq War that was wrong in every respect.
During a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Benghazi, Norton said Iraq was "perhaps the most catastrophic war of the 20th century."
The U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 was of course at the outset of the 21st century, and, even if it wasn't, could not be considered more catastrophic than World War I, World War II or even the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.
Her statement prompted someone to create the hashtag #eleanorholmesnortonhistory, generating a stream of tweets such as this:
"The attack on Pearl Harbor was the worst military disaster of the Ming Dynasty" #eleanorholmesnortonhistory— Sean Agnew (@seanagnew) May 1, 2014
Wait, wasn't it the Germans who bombed Pearl Harbor?
