A D.C. man was sentenced to four years behind bars for robbing a woman at a check-cashing store in Northwest Washington.

According to prosecutors, Michael Mitchell, 41, entered a check cashing store at Georgia and New Hampshire NW in October 2012 and approached a woman inside.

The woman was an immigrant who worked two jobs as a nursing assistant and was in the store to send money to her family in Uganda. Mitchell grabbed the victim's purse and an envelope containing money for her family.

The victim fought back, and Mitchell ripped the items from her hands and ran out of the store, prosecutors said. Eyewitnesses came to the woman's aid and helped her chase after the attacker, until police arrived and caught him.

Mitchell pleaded guilt to robbery in December. He was previously convicted of multiple violent and theft-related offense dating back to the 1990s.
