D.C. is the third best vacation spot in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The list, released Monday, ranked the top 21 places to visit in the United States, with Yellowstone National Park snagging the top spot. New York City came in at No. 2, San Diego fourth, and San Francisco claimed the fifth spot.

The District was praised for its memorials and monuments, its museums and a "sweet restaurant and bar scene."

The report compiled data from around the world and put together a number of lists of vacation spots ranging from best honeymoon destinations and the best beaches in the world.

This is the first time the publication included destinations in Asia, Australia, the Pacific, Central and South America, Africa and the Middle East.
