Two separate shootings in the District overnight left a total of three men injured, police said.

The first shooting took place shortly before midnight in the 800 block of Buchanan Street NW, which is near Sherman Circle.

A man told police that he was walking when the assailant emerged from an alley and started shooting. The victim was struck in the forearm and armpit and was conscious and breathing when he was taken to a hospital, police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay said. The assailant was described as a man wearing a black ski mask and carrying a handgun.

The second shooting occurred at about 1:50 a.m. in the 2400 block of Elvans Road SE, which is near Suitland Parkway. The victims, two men, told police that they were approached by two or three men, one of whom produced a handgun and shot them, Clay said.

The victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
