D.C. police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Southeast Washington.

The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. Tuesday in the 2600 block of Sheridan Road.

An officer stopped 34-year-old Cleman Richerd Sweptson, Jr. who was believed to be under the influence of narcotics and was acting erratic and agitated, D.C. police spokesman Officer Araz Alali said.

At some point during the encounter, Sweptson pointed a handgun at the officer and fired it. The officer then fired back, striking the man multiple times. Sweptson, of Southeast D.C., died at the scene, Alali said.

The officer, who is assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District, was not injured.

A handgun was recovered at the scene of the incident, Alali said.
