WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier has been honored by the Anti-Defamation League for her efforts to fight terrorism and injustice.

Lanier accepted the ADL's William and Naomi Gorowitz Institute Service Award at a ceremony on Tuesday.

In 2011, Lanier asked the ADL to assess how the Metropolitan Police Department was handling hate crimes in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The department has since begun implementing recommendations from an ADL task force.

ADL director Abraham Foxman says Lanier's handling of the issue shows why she's "an extraordinary law enforcement leader." Foxman adds that Lanier is distinguished by "her values, her compassion and her belief in equality and fairness."

The ADL assists law enforcement with resources to fight terrorists and extremists.
