RICHMOND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Empire Mine in the Upper Peninsula's Marquette County has received a new lease on life.

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. announced Thursday that it's reached a deal with ArcelorMittal SA to supply iron ore pellets through January 2017, with an option to extend for a year beyond that.

The Mining Journal of Marquette (http://bit.ly/1hDRD4l ) says Cliffs Natural Resources and the Luxembourg-based steelmaking company also extended their partnership for the Empire Mine, located in the unincorporated community of Palmer. It's in Richmond Township, about 12 miles southwest of Marquette.

The partnership was scheduled to expire in December. Cleveland-based Cliffs Natural Resources earlier announced the mine's closing because it lacked a customer.

Cliffs Natural Resources spokeswoman Patricia Persico says the mine's employment will remain about 600.
