The Delhi High Court, while confirming the death penalty to four men convicted of a gang rape they committed in December, 2012, said Thursday that such a harsh sentence is kept on the books to remind criminals that human life is very precious. The court said that the judiciary in India has been vested with the discretion to impose, or not to impose, the death penalty: one of the greatest burdens it must carry while the death penalty remains legal.
