RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The sister of former Gov. Bob McDonnell is testifying on her brother's behalf at his public corruption trial.
McDonnell and sister Maureen McDonnell were involved in a struggling real estate business that has been at issue in the trial. The business involved renting vacation homes in Virginia Beach.
Prosecutors say Bob McDonnell and his wife, also named Maureen, were struggling financially and accepted more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from former Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for using their office to promote Star's tobacco-based nutritional supplement. The couple is charged in a 14-count indictment.
Bob McDonnell is expected to take the stand in his own defense at some point in the trial, which is in its fourth week.
