BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — Democratic congressional candidate David Gill is conceding in his central Illinois race to Republican Rodney Davis.

Gill said Friday that his campaign completed an analysis of outstanding provisional and absentee ballots in the state's 13th congressional district. Gill says "there are simply not enough" uncounted ballots left to erase his deficit. The Associated Press declared Davis the winner on Tuesday. Davis on Friday thanked Gill for campaigning with "passion."

Gill, a Bloomington physician, initially faced longtime Republican Congressman Tim Johnson of Urbana. But, just weeks after an easy primary win in the new district, Johnson announced that he wouldn't seek re-election.

Republicans chose Davis to fill the place on the ballot. He was an aide to Republican Congressman John Shimkus' and lives in Taylorville.
