The homeowner who shot and killed a teenager first fired a warning shot, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Caleb Gordley, 16, was killed early Sunday after he mistakenly entered his neighbor's home through a window. Sheriff's deputies say Gordley had been drinking with friends.

Gordley set off the alarm ,and the homeowner ordered him to stop and then discharged the .40-caliber pistol as a warning, deputies said. The teen continued to climb the stairs and entered the hallway, and the homeowner fired several times, striking the teen once in the left rear shoulder. The teen stumbled past the homeowner in the hallway and collapsed, investigators said. He died on the scene.
