CORNVILLE, Ariz. (AP) — Yavapai County sheriff's deputies are investigating damage done to a Native American archaeological site and the possible theft of historic items.

Deputies say they were called out to the site in Cornville on Nov. 20 to investigate a trespassing incident.

The site steward reported that someone had trespassed onto the gated property and damaged the dig area. The steward found two freshly dug holes, digging tools, a dirt strainer and a bucket nearby.

Deputies say the empty holes indicate a likely theft.

Deputies believe the illegal digging happened between Nov. 13 and Nov. 20.
