Detroit Council: Investigate George Zimmerman

The Detroit City Council evidently has time on its hands now that the city government has been taken over by Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr, whose petition to seek bankruptcy protection was approved today by the federal bankruptcy judge. That overrules an Ingham County (Lansing) state court ruling that Orr could not file for bankruptcy because of the state Constitution’s guarantee of public employee pension entitlements.

So the City Council, now incompetent to deal with Detroit’s problems, has decided to weigh in on criminal justice in Florida. It unanimously passed a resolution calling for a federal investigation on whether George Zimmerman should be prosecuted for violating Trayvon Martin’s civil rights. My understanding is that the U.S. Justice Department is already looking at the case, but perhaps the Detroit City Council provides additional moral authority here.

In fairness I should note that at least one Council member acknowledges that Detroit has its own problems with violent crime. “We need to have that same level of outrage with respect to the black-on-black crime that takes place in our community,” the Detroit Free Press reports Councilman Kenneth Cockrel Jr. as saying. “How many people were shot — maybe even shot and killed this past weekend in the city — mostly likely by folks who look just like them?”
