Dez Wells dealt eight assists Tuesday against Boston College, including seven in the second half when he often took control of the Terps’ offense in the halfcourt. Predictably enough, the first  question for Maryland coach Mark Turgeon on Thursday was whether Wells would play point guard Saturday at No. 1 Duke.

“He’s gonna have the ball more,” Turgeon said. “Will he start at point guard? No, because that would flat wear him out as the game goes on.”

No one has seized the position yet for Maryland (15-4, 3-3). Wells’ audition was impressive as he registered three more assists than he has ever had in a game. He has the quickness and strength to penetrate and get to the rim. But the demands of the position would be difficult at his size (6-5, 215).

“There will be certain situations, certain lineups, certain plays that we call where he has the ball,” Turgeon said.”If he starts to look tired we’ll go in another direction.”

So consider it point guard by committee with sophomore Nick Faust, the starter the last three games, sharing the position with junior Pe’Shon Howard, the starter for most of the first two months, freshman Seth Allen, who has played the point, but appeared more comfortable on the wing lately, and sophomore Wells, who Turgeon will look to in situations.

“Probably more so with a smaller lineup, he’ll have the ball in his hands to make plays, and have shooters around him, which opens things up,” Turgeon said. “He sees the floor pretty well.”
