A District Heights police officer shot a handcuffed suspect in the back as he was trying to escape, authorities said.

The incident occurred Thursday at about 5:20 p.m. at Foster Street at County Road. Sgt. Johnnie Riley fired to prevent 26-year-old Kalvin Kyle, who he had just arrested in the theft of a motorcycle, from escaping, District Heights police said.

Kyle was handcuffed at time he was shot, according to a Prince George's County police spokesman.

He was shot in the back and taken to a hospital. He will be turned over to the Department of Corrections after he is released from medical treatment, police said.

Riley, an eight-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave, per departmental policy.
