A District man was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in jail for using a cement slab to kill a sleeping, 6-month-old puppy, prosecutors said.
Sean Delontay Branch, 24, pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty in September, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington. He was sentenced in D.C. Superior Court.
On June 29, a puppy named King Tut was tied to a fence behind the Circle Seven Express store on the 1200 block of Mount Olivet Road NE. Prosecutors said that Branch, who was angry with King Tut's owner, dropped a nearly 100-pound cement slab on the dog when the owner had walked away.
A witness flagged down the owner and told him what happened. The dog had died by the time the owner returned.
After serving his jail time, Branch will be placed on three years of supervised release, officials said.
During that time, he will have to get a mental-health evaluation and take anger management classes. Branch also has to pay $450 to a crime victims' fund.
