NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Court records say a stabbing at a Virginia Navy installation that led to a massive manhunt near a naval hospital occurred in the facility's barracks.
An affidavit filed in federal court on Monday says Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur Garrett Harwell stabbed Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin D. Powell multiple times on Friday during a fight in a barracks near Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
The affidavit says Powell was stabbed in the neck and the abdomen. He made it out of the building before collapsing near a Navy Exchange.
The stabbing led to the medical center being placed on lockdown for most of the day on Friday while authorities searched for Harwell.
The affidavit says Harwell was arrested at a hotel at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
