A 2-year-old dog named Coco was stabbed seven times last month in Southeast D.C., officials said.
On Sept. 21, a man "known to suffer from mental health problems" stabbed the family dog on the 4300 Block of Hillside Road SE, according to the Washington Humane Society.
The suspect was taken into custody by D.C. police to receive a psychiatric evaluation. The Humane Society's law enforcement team is working on presenting the case to the United States Attorney's office in hopes that the suspect will face criminal charges.
Coco, a Shih Tzu, was taken to a hospital. She will need extensive rehabilitation, will need to be monitored throughout the day and is on medications, officials said.
The Humane Society is seeking funds to cover Coco's medical costs. Anyone who wishes to donate can visit washhumane.org/coco.
