A 48-year-old Woodbridge man was charged with child neglect and driving under the influence after police said he abandoned a vehicle with the engine still running and a toddler still in the back seat.

Around 1:30 a.m. Monday, Prince William County police responded to Periscope Place and Hour Glass Drive in Dumfries for a report of a possible crash. Instead of a traffic accident, police found an abandoned car, still running, in the middle of the road, with an 8-month-old girl strapped into a child's seat. Witnesses said the driver was seen running from the area.

Police found the alleged driver and family member of the girl, Nana Kwabena Akoanor II, 48, at a nearby house, and he appeared intoxicated. He remains behind bars without bond.

The child was not injured and released to family members. The relationship of the driver and child was not released to protect the identity of the victim, police said.
