BATON ROUGE, La. (Legal Newsline) – Two weeks ago, Phil Robertson, star of the popular television show “Duck Dynasty” and patriarch of the Robertson family, spoke at a Republican conference.
On Monday, the family’s attempt to increase its political profile continued, as Robertson’s nephew Zach Dasher announced his candidacy for Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District.
The seat is currently occupied by Republican Rep. Vance McAllister, who was elected with the family’s support in 2013 and then later engulfed in a scandal when video footage surfaced of him kissing a married female staffer.
The 36-year-old Dasher, who has never held office, said in his Monday announcement that he opposes the Affordable Care Act and supports an amendment forcing Congress to balance the budget.
“I got to looking around at the problems in politics today, and what I see in Washington, D.C., is no God. There is no God. The elite political class thinks they can be running our lives,” Dasher said in an interview with The Associated Press.
“I think there’s a vacuum in D.C. of people who understand where rights come from. Rights don’t come from men. They come from God.”
As previously reported, on May 29 Robertson was a guest speaker at the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
McAllister has until August to declare his intention for re-election.
