Charges for the man accused of being the "East Coast Rapist" will go to a grand jury in Prince William County.

Aaron Thomas appeared in court Thursday for his preliminary hearing on charges relating to an incident in which he allegedly attacked three teenage girls on Halloween 2009 in Dale City. If convicted, Thomas could receive life in prison.

Witnesses at the hearing testified that Thomas took the 16- and 17-year old girls into the woods and sexually assaulted two of them.

The defense had previously questioned Thomas' competency to stand trial, but a court-ordered  report found that he was competent.

Thomas is suspected in up to 17 attacks in Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island and Connecticut that occurred from 1997 to 2009. He was arrested in March in New Haven, Conn.
