An elderly woman on her way to church was killed when she was struck by her own vehicle.

Police said the 86-year-old Marie Surowics pulled her van into the parking lot at the St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Bowie around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Surowics, of Bowie, got out of the driver's side, but failed to put the van in park, said Bowie Police Chief John Nesky.

The van rolled back with the driver's door still opened, knocking the woman to the ground. The van backed over the woman.

Surowics was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
