There's a story Elizabeth Dole has been telling all over Washington for years. When the former U.S. senator started at Harvard Law School, a fellow student -- who's now a partner at a high-powered Washington law firm -- said, "What are you doing here? Don't you know you're taking the place of a man?"
"I love to tell this story," Dole said, revealing that male friends have called her to say, "Tell me it's not me!" upon hearing it. Dole won a National Women's History Museum Living Legacy award on Wednesday night to a standing ovation, along with photographer Annie Leibowitz, author Richard Rhodes and Maya Angelou at the second Christine de Pizan Honors Gala. Angelou gave her acceptance speech via video.
In recent years, the museum, which is still working toward finding a permanent home on the National Mall, has enlisted a number of faces to represent the cause including actresses Alfre Woodard, Meryl Streep and "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke.
