RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Agriculture officials say the emerald ash borer has been detected in four more counties in Virginia.

The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Tuesday the highly destructive beetle is now in Alleghany, Bath, Fauquier and Page counties.

The emerald ash borer has been detected in 21 counties and seven cities since it initially was found in Fairfax County in 2003.

In 2012, a quarantine for the emerald ash borer was expanded statewide. Articles such as ash logs, ash nursery stock and firewood are prohibited from being transported out of state.

The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services also encourages campers to buy and burn firewood at local campsites rather than transporting it from distant locations.
