Meat Week 2011, starting Sunday Carnivores, unite. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, there’s an entire week dedicated to eating meat. Does it get much better than this?
Started by a pair of friends in Florida in 2005, Meat Week has spread to 15 U.S. cities and London. Last year marked Meat Week’s first entry into the D.C. area when Mike Bober of the Capital Spice blog spearheaded the local chapter and served as its “captain.” This year, Bober’s friend and last year’s “first mate” Jenelle Dennis now holds the role of captain, who acts as the organizer.
Specifically, Meat Week celebrates barbecue. Taking place the week before the Super Bowl, people gather at a different barbecue restaurant in the Metro area each day to commiserate and enjoy good food.
“It’s an opportunity to go to some very good barbecue restaurants,” Dennis said, adding that diners can enjoy new and old favorites.
Dennis is a certified Kansas City Barbecue Society judge, and Meat Week falls during the judging’s offseason.
In addition to such standards as Rockland’s and Capital Q, the Meat Week tour will highlight a number of new establishments such as the American Ice. Co, PORC, Pork Barrel and Mr. P’s.
“I think it’s burgeoning,” Dennis said of the local barbecue scene. “We’re seeing an uptick in an interest in barbecue.”
Meat Week kicks off on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Urban Bar-B-Que Co. in Rockville. Visit meatweekisreal.com for more information and a complete schedule.

Alexandria Winter Restaurant Week, through Sunday
While D.C.’s Restaurant Week concluded on Jan. 23, Alexandria’s is going strong through Sunday. If you haven’t explored Old Town, or it’s been a while, here’s your excuse. This event is slightly different from the one in D.C. Some restaurants offer a three-course dinner for $35, and others feature a dinner for two for $35. Now that’s a deal.
