NEW YORK (AP) — The case against a man accused in the infamous 1979 disappearance of a New York City boy has gone to a grand jury.

A person familiar with case says the decision on whether to indict Pedro Hernandez on murder charges could be announced at a Thursday court appearance.

The person wasn't authorized to discuss the probe and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Maple Shade, N.J. resident was arrested in May. Police say he confessed to strangling 6-year-old Etan Patz (AY'-tahn PAYTS). The case has been in limbo while investigators have sought to gather evidence to back up the confession.

His attorney has said Hernandez has psychological problems.

Etan's disappearance prompted an international search and spawned a movement to publicize missing children cases.

The Manhattan prosecutor declined comment Wednesday.
