RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A former Richmond public housing police chief is suing over his firing.

Hal Hazelton claims he was fired in retaliation for being whistleblower.

Media outlets report that Hazelton filed the lawsuit this week in Richmond Circuit Court. The defendants are three Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority officials and a former chairman of the agency's board.

A spokesman for the Richmond law firm representing the three said in a statement Thursday the "defendants unequivocally and vehemently deny the allegations."

The lawsuit says the three authority officials conspired to fire Hazelton after he reported improper activity to the board of commissioners and law enforcement, and the former board chairman allowed the firing.

The lawsuit didn't provide details of the alleged improper activity.

Hazelton was fired on Oct. 15, 2013.
