WASHINGTON (AP) — A former employee with the Social Security Administration has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from beneficiaries in exchange for higher benefits.

Forty-six-year-old Christopher Payton of Mount Rainier, Md., entered the plea Tuesday in federal court in Washington. Prosecutors say Payton faces a likely range of 30 to 37 months in prison at sentencing on July 16.

According to a statement of offense, Payton worked in Social Security's Anacostia office. Prosecutors say between January and May of 2013, Payton told 13 beneficiaries that if they gave him a tip, he would cause extra benefits to go into their bank accounts.

Authorities say Payton received nearly $55,000 in payments from the beneficiaries.
