Washington Examiner Watchdog investigative reporter Mark Flatten has been named the 2014 recipient of the American Legion's Fourth Estate Award.

Flatten's series on the Department of Veterans Affairs - "Making America's Heroes Wait" - was cited by the American Legion in announcing the award.

"The National Media and Communications Commission met during our spring meetings in Indianapolis and selected the reports as being in the best tradition of the Fourth Estate Award program, which honors excellence in journalism that was instrumental in bringing a positive change to the community, state or nation."

The award-winning series appeared from Feb. 10 through Feb 14 and can be read here.
