Maj. Mary Gavin takes over as the new police chief in Falls Church on Monday, replacing the retiring Chief Harry Reitze, city manager Wyatt Shields announced.

Gavin, the city's deputy police chief since 2007, formerly served in the Arlington County Police Department for 21 years, where she served as the vice narcotics commander and helped create Arlington's first youth police academy, before working for Falls Church.

"Mary has earned the trust and respect of the members of the department and the community," Shields said. "She lives and breathes the highest standards of law enforcement and is the ideal person to lead our police department forward."

Reitze announced plans to retire in October after 37 years with the Falls Church police department, and stepped down Sunday.
