IN WAR-TORN WESTERN SYRIA -- ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS MEDIEVAL CASTLES SITS ON A HILLTOP.

THE CRAC DES CHEVALIERS WAS BUILT BY THE CRUSADERS IN THE 12TH CENTURY -- AND IT'S A UNITED NATIONS WORLD HERITAGE SITE.

BUT TODAY - IT BEARS THE SCARS OF SYRIA'S DEVASTATING CIVIL WAR.

ITS WALLS ARE DAMAGED -- THE ROOF HAS BEEN PUNCTURED -- AND RELIGIOUS ARTIFACTS HERE HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.

TWO YEARS AGO -- THE ASSAD REGIME DETERMINED THE TOWN BELOW THE CASTLE WAS SUPPORTING THE REBELS.

IT BEGAN A BLOCKADE THAT WOUND UP BECOMING A FULL-SCALE ATTACK THIS SPRING.

MANY TOWNSPEOPLE TOOK REFUGE IN THE CASTLE.

IN MARCH -- HOWEVER -- SYRIAN JETS UNLEASHED AIRSTRIKES AGAINST REBEL STRONGHOLDS ALONG THE BORDER.

AND CANNON FIRE PUMMELED THE CASTLE WALLS.

THE REGIME SAYS ABOUT 300 VILLAGERS AND REBELS WERE KILLED IN THE OFFENSIVE -- WHILE THOUSANDS FLED ACROSS THE BORDER INTO LEBANON.

INSIDE THE CASTLE -- MATTRESSES -- BLANKETS -- GAS COOKERS AND CLOTHES LIE SCATTERED ON THE FLOOR.

OUTSIDE -- GOVERNMENT TROOPS PATROL THE SITE -- MAKING SURE IT STAYS IN THE HANDS OF THE REGIME.
