FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — Farmington may install a GPS tracking system on its transit system buses to both comply with a federal reporting mandate and provide with city with on-time information.

The City Council on Tuesday is to consider whether to request a presentation from Atlanta-based RouteMatch Software.

Assistant City Manager Bob Campbell says the software would enable the city to submit reports to the Federal Transit Administration's database.

According to the Farmington Daily Times (http://bit.ly/YiO4Lr ), the federal government requires reporting by transit systems that received or benefit from FTA grants.

Campbell says it would mean the city wouldn't have to rely on its contractor for on-time information.

Campbell says the system could be implemented by May if the council decides to get a presentation and then orders installation of the system.
