Former University of Maryland basketball player Earl Badu has died after leaping from an interstate overpass just outside Baltimore in an apparent suicide.

The 33-year-old jumped from the Interstate 95 overpass onto Interstate 695 on Thursday morning in White Marsh, Baltimore County police reported. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died later Thursday.

Badu walked on to the Maryland basketball team in 1998 and was on the 2002 national championship team. He only played 33 minutes and scored four points in his time on the team.

Two weeks ago, Badu pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Circuit Court to passing a bad check, court records show.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
