SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — The three sites making up the Fort Sumter Group of the National Park Service on the South Carolina coast attracted more than 900,000 during 2011.
Park officials also announced Tuesday that those visitors spent almost $24 million in surrounding communities, supporting 312 jobs.
The information is part of a spending analysis of national park visitors across the country conducted by Michigan State University for the National Park Service. Nationwide, that study showed $13 billion in direct spending by 279 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park.
The Fort Sumter Group includes Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. It also includes Fort Moultrie on nearby Sullivans Island and the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site in Mount Pleasant.
