1966: The Paul is Dead hoax, which began in 1969, suggested that Beatles singer Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash on this day and replaced with a look-alike. Hunting for clues of his death in the band's lyrics and artwork became an international phenomenon in a matter of weeks.
