Many were skeptical when news first came of a television adaptation of the Coen Brothers’ classic, Fargo, especially after an attempt was made once before in 1997 to adapt the film to the small screen. Of course much has changed in the world of television during the intervening years, and the ability of cable networks such as FX to pull off a faithful adaption has been greatly improved. From writer Noah Hawley, FX’s mini-series (mainly) follows the journeys of Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) and Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman); one, a ruthless killer that’ll bend anyone to his will with a slew of complicated ramblings and devious motives, the other a not-very-good insurance salesman who’s reached his tipping point.
