Since resigning from Congress to focus on her recovery from a 2011 shooting, Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, have launched a pro-gun control political action committee.

Kelly appears in one of the Vogue photos, along with another key figure in Giffords' life: Nelson, the couple's half-lab/half-golden retriever.
