Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Kentucky Democrat challenging Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for reelection, told reporters that Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system prevents Hamas militants from tunneling into the Jewish state.

Iron Dome, a joint U.S.-Israel missile defense system, tracks rockets fired from Hamas bases in Gaza and destroys them in mid-air prior to impact. The highly successful program has saved unknown lives — nearly 9,000 rockets have been fired into Israel since the outbreak of hostilities three weeks ago.

However, Hamas also utilizes a network of tunnels to ship materials and infiltrate Israeli territory to carry out attacks against civilians and IDF units. The Israeli government stages regular incursions into the Gaza Strip to find and destroy the tunnel networks. As an air-to-air missile defense system, the Iron Dome has virtually nothing at all to do with eradicating the Hamas tunnels.

Still, Grimes told the Lexington Herald-Leader, “The Iron Dome has been a big reason why Israel has been able to withstand the terrorists that have tried to tunnel their way in.”
