A 49-year-old Gaithersburg man died early Sunday morning when he drove off the road and struck a tree in his hometown.

Police have identified the deceased as Jose Antonio Ayala of Fullview Court in Gaithersburg.

Around 1:02 a.m., an office-duty employee of the police department called authorities to report a gray pickup truck driving erratically. Police put a lookout for the vehicle and an officer spotted the truck near Route 108 and Hawkins Creamery Road.

Before the police officer could stop the driver, the vehicle veered off the eastbound lane of Route 108, hitting a tree. Ayala died at the scene.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is seeking help to determine what may have caused the accident. Ayala's family told police he was a diabetic and insulin dependent. He was last seen at 6 p.m. Saturday when he left his home for groceries.

Information on Ayala's whereabouts Saturday evening should be reported to 240-773-6620.
