Alexandria Court Services seeks male volunteers to mentor at-risk 11- and 12-year-old boys to help them produce movies on Alexandria as part of the city’s iMentor program.
Mentors will work with these children until Decemberas they learn to use moviemaking technology on a topic of interest. Volunteers will continue to work with the boys through April 2008 in hopes of forming a lasting relationship, program coordinator Linda Odell said.
“You have to mentor for a year to have a lasting effect on the child’s life,” she said. “This is a way to formulate the relationship in a safe and nurturing environment.”
Odell said it’s often difficult to find male mentors. This program is designed specifically to engage men by teaching them about film-making technology while in an environment where they can serve as a mentor.
Meeting for mentors and the at-risk kids are held each Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., April through November. George Washington Middle School at 1005 Mount Vernon Ave. will hold an orientation for those interested in the program on March 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
