Alexandria is organizing a cleanup Saturday of the Huntington area, which was devastated by recent heavy rains and flooding.

Volunteers are expected to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the entrance to the Townes at Cameron Parke, located at the intersection of Cameron Park Court and Eisenhower Avenue, and work to clean up debris until 11:30 a.m.

Many in the Huntington area along the border between Alexandria and Fairfax cannot return to their homes due to water damage caused by the recent floodings.

In additionto home damage, loose garbage and debris litter the area.

Diana Handy, Alexandria’s water quality compliance manager, said the volunteer effort was organized at the request of a resident who asked if the city could do anything to aid cleanup. The city, in partnership with Alexandria’s Eisenhower Partnership and the Cameron Parke Homeowners Association, decided to organize Saturday’s event.

“The main thing is that it’s for aesthetics and pride,” Handy said. “If we get 50 [volunteers], I’ll be happy.”

In the event of rain, the cleanup will be moved to Sunday.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Handy at 703-519-3400, extension 166.
